Atlantis High has every reason to celebrate after their outstanding performance at the WP Chess Top Schools Tournament. The school’s under-17 chess team recently secured an impressive 2nd place overall, while the under-19s proudly finished 4th in their division.
Team coordinator, Johlene Davids, says it is a huge achievement, especially since many of their competitors had private coaches. “Our learners did amazingly well. I always remind them never to feel intimidated , they must believe in themselves and their love for the game.” The tournament was not without challenges, especially in the later rounds when the teams faced the top players. Yet, through passion and determination, they stayed strong. Davids highlights the importance of teamwork, even in a sport often seen as an individual game. Stronger players are encouraged to guide and mentor others, building both skills and leadership. Parents also played a vital role by supporting their children at tournaments, and encouraging practice at home. “We are a team of four teachers working together to provide opportunities for these learners. It is not only about chess, it builds confidence and helps them academically too,” said Davids. Beyond the results, the learners also connected with students from other schools, building networks and friendships that motivate them on and off the chessboard.
